killed seven and caused 12.5 million in property damage.

It Could Happen to You

We believe that you don't need the threat of a major disaster to have a need for preparedness. The first step in developing a family disaster plan, identifying the threats to you and your family, empowers you to conquer and control your fears about the ramifications of those threats. It will also ease the frustrations that come with bridge closures or commute delays due to unforeseable events. Determining what disasters potentially threaten you and your family will then give you the parameters necessary for taking action. So, convene your family council and discuss the following questions:

1. What natural disasters or extreme conditions could directly impact our safety, our lives and/or our property?

  • Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents are subject to the direct impact of only 3 major natural disasters: earthquakes, wind storms, including occasional severe winter storms, and fires.
2. What natural disasters or extreme conditions could indirectly impact our safety, our lives and/or our property?
  • Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents are subject to the indirect impact of such natural disasters as a volcanic eruption, tsunami/seiche activity within the Puget Sound, and avalanches, droughts, floods or landslides in outlying areas.
  • Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents are subject to such technological, or man-made, disasters in the greater Puget Sound area such as civil disorder, dam failures, power outages, food and water supply contamination, chemical spills, radiation hazards, terrorism, transportation accidents and school violence.
3. What are the ramifications of each of these?
  • By ramifications, we mean how each disaster or emergency situation could affect you either directly or indirectly. This question will require careful thinking as everyone's situation will be different. Families with small children have different concerns than the elderly or single individuals. Parents who have lengthy commutes will have different concerns than parents who work at home or in the local community.
  • Please also note if any of the ramifications on your list would require you to evacuate from your home, the school your kids go to, or the location of your job.
